Today in L.A we watched the movie “Get A Clue”. This movie is based on the book, “The Westing Game”. The Westing game is about a man’s twisted game. Sam Westing sets up a game based on his death. He makes everyone believe he is dead by writing his will that says, “My life was taken by one of you.” Now everyone gets clues to figure out who the murderer is. This book-movie is exiting. That is what we did today in L.A

At the beginning of the class Mr.Hetherington showed us how to use the blog google. After that he told us that we’d be doing some thinking. The next one was… Which worlds don’t belong.

1) Window, Glass Door, Wall

2) Roller Skates, Cars, Houses

3) Floppy Drive, Hard Drive, Driveway

4) Saturn, Venus, Frogs

5) Lead, Nickel, Oxygen

6) Sad, Happy, Mad

7) Trees, Grass, Cats

8) Ball, Sphere, Cube

9) Pencil, Tape, Glue

10) Dance, Present, Gift

11) Shop, Bear, Buy

12) Cake, Poison, Muffin

13) Energy, Lawn Mower, Scissors

Some people had difficulty with 3, 6, and 8.

The third one was…A farmer has a fox, a goose, and a bag of grain, and one boat to cross a steam, Which is only big enough to take one at a time. If left alone together, the fox would eat the goose and the goose would eat the grain. How can the farmer get all 3 to the other side? The answer is to be continued…

Anoter was what is interesting about this statement…

The
Ottoman Empire began in 1299 and ended in 1922. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was in control of parts 3 cotenants. The
Ottoman Empire was one of the most powerful empires in the world at that time. For six centuries the
Ottoman Empire was a major attraction. The city that’s name kept changing (
Constantinople,
Byzantium, and
Istanbul) was now
Istanbul. The area of the
Ottoman Empire was 4,633,226 sq mi. The government of the
Ottoman Empire was a monarchy. The ottomans thought of themselves as the universal empire. The
Ottoman Empire was the only Islamic country to challenge the rising power of
Western Europe between the 15th and 19th centuries. In 1638 the ottomans controlled
Turkey,
Syria,
Palestine,
Arabia, and
Egypt.  They controlled most of the
Balkan Peninsula. For almost 600 years the Turkish rulers made those countries pay heavy taxes and obey Muslim laws.

The country of Libya has no rivers and it is mostly  desert. In Libya has an oasis which is green area that is fed by underground water. Libya also uses the aquifer to get the water. The aquifer is a rock layer full of water. NO FISH! The people get the fresh water from the aquifer if the layer is close to the surface. Libya gets it’s money from the underground pipeline that was built in the 1990’s. They get their food from imports. Did you know that the Berbers were the first known people to live in Africa. Crayola brand crayons (compare prices) were the first kids crayons ever made, invented by cousins, Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith. The brand’s first box of eight Crayola crayons made its debut in 1903. The crayons were sold for a nickel and the colors were black, brown, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow, and green. The word Crayola was created by Alice Stead Binney (wife of Edwin Binney) who took the French words for chalk (craie) and oily (oleaginous) and combined them.

Today, there over one hundred different types of crayons being made by Crayola including crayons that: sparkle with glitter, glow in the dark, smell like flowers, change colors, and wash off walls and other surfaces and materials.

According to Crayola’s “History of Crayons”

Europe was the birthplace of the “modern” crayon, a man-made cylinder that resembled contemporary sticks.  The first such crayons are purported to have consisted of a mixture of charcoal and oil. Later, powdered pigments of various hues replaced the charcoal. It was subsequently discovered that substituting wax for the oil in the mixture made the resulting sticks sturdier and easier to handle.

The Birth of Crayola
In 1864, Joseph W. Binney founded the Peekskill Chemical Company in Peekskill, N.Y. This company was responsible for products in the black and red color range, such as lampblack, charcoal and a paint containing red iron oxide which was often used to coat the barns dotting America’s rural landscape.

Peekskill Chemical was also instrumental in creating an improved and black colored automobile tire by adding carbon black that was found to increase the tire tread life by four or five times.

Around 1885, Joseph’s son, Edwin Binney, and nephew, C. Harold Smith, formed the partnership of Binney & Smith. The cousins expanded the company’s product line to include shoe polish and printing ink. In 1900, the company purchased a stone mill in Easton, PA, and began producing slate pencils for schools. This started Binney’s and Smith’s research into nontoxic and colorful drawing mediums for kids. They had already invented a new wax crayon used to mark crates and barrels, however, it was loaded with carbon black and too toxic for children. They were confident that the pigment and wax mixing techniques they had developed could be adapted for a variety of safe colors.

In 1903, a new brand of crayons with superior working qualities was introduced - Crayola Crayons.”

 Rest easy, sleep well.Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held.

Peace, peace, and farewell…    Readers may be interested to know that these wreaths — some 5,000 — are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He’s done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one the poorest parts of the state.Please share this with everyone on your address list. You hear too much about the bad things people do. Everyone should hear about this.

My mom got this in an e-mail an said I should put it on my blog!

A Friend’s GreetingI’d like to be the sort of friend that
you have been to me;
I’d like to be the help that
you’ve been always glad to be;
I’d like to mean as much to you
each minute of the day
As you have meant, old friend of mine,
to me along the way.

I’d like to do the big things and
the splendid things for you,
To brush the gray from out your skies
and leave them only blue;

I’d like to say the kindly things that
I so oft have heard,
And feel that I could rouse your soul
the way that mine you’ve stirred.

I’d like to give you back the joy
that you have given me,
Yet that were wishing you a need
I hope will never be;

I’d like to make you feel as rich as I,
who travel on
Undaunted in the darkest hours with you to
lean upon.

I’m wishing at this time that I
could but repay
A portion of the gladness that
you’ve strewn along my way;

And could I have one wish this year,
this only would it be:
I’d like to be the sort of friend
that you have been to me.
